(This was the last piece of artwork I completed in New Orleans before moving to Bowling Green, KY)
To outsiders (people who do not live in New Orleans) this watercolor painting may look ridiculous-why did this artist paint a sewerage cover? To New Orleanians, this 9 ½ pound, 10” Art Deco designed wrought iron cover have jazzed up New Orleans sidewalks since the 1920’s. The water meter cover was designed by Edwin Ford of the Ford Meter Box Company, Wabash, Indiana. Thanks to New Orleans sea level woes and no basements, the boxes were installed on the sidewalks throughout the city. Over time, the meter box covers became so popular with tourists and locals alike, and even though it is very illegal, people stole the covers as souvenirs dragging them through airports, underground (grin) sales through the internet and a common target for gardeners to use in their lawns for stepping stones. The reason why I painted this…it was a commission given to me by a Crescent Cover enthusiasts’! I also thought it was a perfect way for this New Orleanian born artist to say goodbye to her city creating a final piece of nostalgic-from-her-heart-art before moving to Kentucky!
